Skagway
The 860 people living in Skagway deal with close to a million
visitors a year, mostly from cruise ships. On any given day,
there may be 20,000 visitors. The place is small, wild, and
relatively free, the very definition of most people's stereotype
of an Alaskan city. Though associated with mining, the city
earns essentially it's entire income off of the tourist trade.
It is one of the very few settlements on the panhandle,
connected to the rest of the world by road. The place has been
singled out in poems, stories, tour guides, movies and
television. This, along with the road access, makes it's tiny
population all the more remarkable. In my home town of
Milwaukee, there are apartment buildings that house more people,
than the number living in Skagway. |
