Downtown
Unlike many large cities, Pittsburgh continues
to have a vital and dyanamic downtown area. The downtown is located
on the "island" between the juncture of the rivers. Bridges, and various
forms of public transit connect this central portion to the residential
areas across the rivers in the surrounding hills. This is the absolute heart
of the city, making it slightly unique in an era in which more and more
the heart of the modern urban area is moving out to the mall and the suburb.
Though Pittsburgh certainly has an expansive metro area; it has not succeeded
in tearing the heart out of the city.

William Penn Place, looking towards Fifth Avenue Place, on Liberty. Kaufmann’s
Department store is to the left.
